Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer to cost over $700M in 2015

Based on a review of Medicare data over the last 15 years, it looks like the cost of treating non-melanoma skin cancer in Australia will reach $703,000,000 in 2015.

This article released in The Medical Journal of Australia, confirms that non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) will remain the most costly cancer in Australia and will increasingly burden the Australian health care system.

In 1997 a total of 412,493 Medicare claims were made for NMSC. By 2010 this number had risen to 767,347 treatments, representing an increase of 86%. It’s calculated that by 2015 the number of NMSC treatments will be 938,991. This represents an increase of 22% between 2010 and 2015 and a doubling in the number of NMSC treatments between 1997 and 2015.
