Former Geelong Cats star, Tim McGrath, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer killing more than 1,500 Australians each year. McGrath, now 42, has already undergone treatment to remove 33 lymph nodes from his armpit. 12 months of intensive melanoma treatment will now take place. Tim McGrath is now encouraging others (particularly men) to be more proactive with their health.
In March last year it was Melbourne Demons great Jim Stynes who lost his battle with melanoma. Stynes fought a very public battle with his skin cancer, helping raise awareness for the disease.
A fundraiser will now take place for McGrath and will be held on September 27 at the Geelong Racing Club. For more details you can email admin@krock.com.au.
The life of a professional athlete is generally spent with many hours outdoors. Often during the hottest and highest UV intensity hours of the day. This is why it is important that any sports professional and anybody spending time outdoors in Australia get regular professional skin cancer check assessments.
If you have a sporting club or organisation with outdoor staff, then contact Spotscreen today to see how we can help you.
