A Simple Blood Test May Show if Melanoma Has Spread

Researchers from Dundee have looked at the possibility of conducting a simple blood test to see if a patient’s melanoma has started to spread.

The research put particular focus on a single gene called TFP12. This gene usually helps stop healthy skin cells growing out of control, which is known to potentially lead to cancer.

Cancer Research UK dermatologist, Professor Charlotte Proby, said that “Using blood tests to assess the landscape of our DNA is a simple way to learn more about what’s going on under the skin. The switching on and off of certain genes seems to affect when, where and why the melanoma spreads. Our goal is to develop a panel of similar biomarkers that will help us to accurately detect those patients needing extra treatment to fight their melanoma.”
