Victoria aiming for national ban on solariums

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu announced has recently confirmed that commercial solariums will be banned in Victoria from December 31, 2014. It is a part of the government’s new skin cancer prevention framework aiming to reduce the incidence of skin cancer.

Mr Baillieu said that 1 in 6 melanomas could be prevented if commercial solaria are closed, with 40,000 cases of skin cancer detected in Victoria in 2010 and 297 melanoma deaths that year.

Health Minister David Davis said melanoma risk increases by 87 per cent in young people who begin using tanning beds before the age of 35.

The ban is an important step forward in skin cancer prevention in Australia. 2 in 3 Australians will develop skin cancer before the age of 70, making it the most diagnosed cancer in the country.
